Commercialization at UHN

University Health Network (UHN) is Canada's largest research hospital and is affiliated with the University of Toronto and a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. The scope of research and complexity of cases at UHN have made it a national and international source for discovery, education and patient care. Research across UHN's seven research institutes spans the full spectrum of diseases and disciplines, including cancer, cardiovascular sciences, transplantation, neural and sensory sciences, musculoskeletal health, rehabilitation sciences, and community and population health. UHN considers innovation and the commercial development of intellectual property (IP) to be integral to its purpose of transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning. Technologies discovered and developed at UHN have formed the basis for many global products and services including pharmaceuticals, biologicals, devices, and diagnostics and represent the foundational IP of spin-out companies contributing billions to the biotech economy in Canada and beyond (i.e. Trillium Therapeutics, Northern Biologics, AvroBio, BlueRock Therapeutics, and Acumyn). The basic research initiatives and translational expertise of UHN’s research and clinical investigators generate a large and growing portfolio of opportunities for corporate partnerships and new ventures. Enabling and leading commercialization partnerships for a healthier world, the team at Commercialization at UHN works on accelerating the world-class research and innovation at UHN into medical products, devices and therapies that improve care for patients around the world. As the leading commercialization institution in Canada and one of the most successful research commercialization facilities in North America, we aspire to maximize the impact of commercialization for patient health, aligned with UHN’s purpose, values and principles. Located at the heart of Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District, Commercialization at UHN professionals manage the intellectual property developed by research scientists and clinicians and work with industry partners and investors to maximize the value of the technology to improve world health and sustain medical research. Commercialization at UHN consolidates separate business functions (licensing, research agreement contracting, patenting, marketing, alliance management, accelerator fund management, commercial analysis and start-up company formation) into a unified office to facilitate interactions with corporate partners, and embeds dedicated Licensing Professional staff within the UHN Research Institutes to coordinate activities between Commercialization at UHN and these centres of innovation.
