Recursion's Platform

The Recursion OS is our platform for the industrialization of drug discovery, linking digital and physical workflows to automate therapeutic program initiation and optimization in a scaled, data-driven manner. These workflows automatically validate biological insights from high-dimensional in vitro profiling and optimize chemical matter through loops of experimental data, ML predictions, and are powered by patient datasets and Recursion’s “maps of biology” – a unique system integrating genome-scale reverse genetics and chemical profiling in a high-dimensional, uniform biological assay to predict trillions of relationships between biological perturbations and therapeutic candidates.

As the Vice President of Computational Biology, you’ll set the strategy and drive the implementation of connecting data from our genome-scale -omics platforms with population- and patient-derived genetics in the real world and leverage advanced analytics including ML/data science to identify and validate target selection, the right disease and patient linkages to our -omics phenotypes, and driving precision medicine via the development of translational biomarkers and patient selection to advance our therapeutic programs. In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to the strategy and execution enabling Recursion to industrialize the process of:
    • Identifying diseases and patients for novel gene-compound inferences as informed by population and clinical genetics, by connecting population-scale forward genetic data and genome-scale platform reverse genetic data with machine learning methods, across monogenic and polygenic conditions.
    • Identifying patient selection/therapeutic response biomarkers at program initiation and through clinical development
  • Lead the strategy and implementation efforts to identify optimal disease and patient linkages to our -omics phenotypes, along with the discovery and validation of translational biomarkers and patient selection solutions to drive precision medicine for our therapeutic programs.
  • Drive the development and implementation of new computational tools including ML/DS approaches, algorithms, and methodologies.
  • Be a key member to contribute to the strategy for the collection of patient genetic and biomarker data in Recursion clinical trials for reverse translation. Be a key member to contribute to strategy for data and diagnostic partnerships in support of the Recursion OS and clinical portfolio.
  • Collaborate with leaders in discovery biology, chemistry, and data science to rapidly deliver a portfolio of therapeutic programs to the clinic and to industrialize the process of doing so with machine-learning-driven optimization of each stage.
  • Guide teams of computational biologists and data scientists in executing the above strategy to industrialize the process of turning maps into medicines.
  • Recruit, mentor, and manage high-performing teams of computational biologists and data scientists working in our therapeutic areas (oncology, neuroscience, and more) as well as on pan-therapeutic area initiatives, including genetics work.

Success in this role will be primarily defined by the impact you show on the industrialization of program initiation with translatable genetic/genomic insights, and of program progression to the development with defined, validated biomarker strategies in clinical development. Success will be defined by the delivery from and development of the therapeutic area computational teams reporting to you.

The Team You’ll Join

As the Computational Biology VP, you will report to the Chief R&D Officer and Chief Commercial Officer, joining a diverse leadership team spanning research, development, data science, machine learning, computational chemistry, and computational biology across Recursion. You will collaborate with peer leaders in data science, biology, chemistry, and engineering to drive both present execution and future industrialization in both Recursion’s core therapeutic areas of oncology, neuroscience and future areas.

The Experience You’ll Need

  • 7+ years applying expertise in computational biology leveraging the latest techniques in ML across drug discovery and development. Key areas of prior experience include addressing problems in functional and statistical genetics with high-dimensional -omics data, particularly aimed at problems in target identification, mechanistic fine-mapping, as well as biomarker identification and development in precision medicine to enable patient stratification and response prediction.
  • A track-record for pairing large-scale patient/population datasets in a closed loop with high-throughput in vitro functional genomics and machine learning to transform the process of identifying targets, models, and biomarkers with patient connectivity and validity.
  • Experience in developing and implementing patient stratification / precision medicine solutions in clinical development leveraging multiomics and clinical data and well versed in regulatory considerations.
  • Experience hiring, managing, and mentoring multiple teams engaged in drug discovery activities in a matrixed environment.
  • Curiosity and the professional skill-set to excel in an open, highly collaborative, and growth-oriented environment.

Location:

Making one of our offices your home base is preferred – Salt Lake City, Toronto, Montreal, London – however, we are open to remote work for this position. We ask that remote employees commit to regular on-site visits for routine work and departmental events.

The Values That We Hope You Share:

  • We Care: We care about our drug candidates, our Recursionauts, their families, each other, our communities, the patients we aim to serve and their loved ones. We also care about our work.
  • We Learn: Learning from the diverse perspectives of our fellow Recursionauts, and from failure, is an essential part of how we make progress.
  • We Deliver: We are unapologetic that our expectations for delivery are extraordinarily high. There is urgency to our existence: we sprint at maximum engagement, making time and space to recover.
  • Act Boldly with Integrity: No company changes the world or reinvents an industry without being bold. It must be balanced; not by timidity, but by doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
  • We are One Recursion: We operate with a 'company first, team second' mentality. Our success comes from working as one interdisciplinary team.

Recursion spends time and energy connecting every aspect of work to these values. They aren’t static, but regularly discussed and questioned because we make decisions rooted in those values in our day-to-day work. You can read more about our values and how we live them every day here.
