Description:

These courses investigate approaches to music learning, teaching, and assessment through vocal and instrumental performance, conducting, listening, analysis and creative problem solving; and personal experience with music and technology and media arts. Candidates will develop a repertoire of diverse teaching and assessment strategies appropriate for Ontario students in grades 7-10. Current music education philosophies, Ministry of Education and Training policy and best practices from the field will be the basis for the designing of curriculum lessons and units. A practitioner research stance is the basis for all assignments. Assignments involve practical applications of methodology and frequent personal reflections on music teaching.

Note on course delivery: Lessons tailored for Senior-level Music: I/S Music Instrumental and Music Vocal (CTL7029Y/CTL7030Y) will be taught on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Students enrolled in the Intermediate classes (CTL7056H and CTL7057H) will attend Wednesday classes only for lessons tailored for Intermediate Music Instrumental and Intermediate Music Vocal. The instructor will receive 0.5 stipend for teaching CTL7056H/CTL7057H.

Salary: As of May 01, 2024, the minimum stipend is $9,457.90 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

1. Should possess a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience,

2. Must demonstrate currency and mastery in the course subject matter;

3. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, including online teaching as relevant;

4. Must demonstrate evidence of knowledge and practice of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion;

5. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching and leading teachers/teacher-candidates’ professional learning;

6. Must possess both instrumental and vocal skills;

7. Should demonstrate curriculum studies, pedagogies, and assessment through a broad range of music-making media and styles.

8. Must have K-12 Ontario classroom experience.

9. An Ontario Teaching certificate is an asset.
