St. Michael’s Hospital is one of the sites of Unity Health Toronto and is a fully-affiliated University of Toronto teaching and research institution. In conjunction with the University of Toronto, Temerity Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, St. Michael’s Hospital is recruiting for a full-time Clinician-Teacher to join the Mental Health and Addictions Service to provide Consultation Liaison (CL) psychiatry care.


St. Michael’s Hospital is located in the heart of downtown Toronto and serves a diverse community, often caring for the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals. The hospital and department are committed to providing care that is accessible to all and accountable to the values of equity, inclusion and anti-racism. Health care services for people who use drugs is an integral part of the work in the Mental Health and Addictions Service and across the hospital.

Applicants must be eligible for full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the level of Lecturer, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The successful candidate must hold a Medical Degree and be eligible for certification in Psychiatry by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have or be eligible of independent licensure in Ontario. The ideal candidate will have exemplary clinical skills, be equipped to work in an active interdisciplinary clinical environment and be dedicated to the highest quality of patient care. Primary clinical responsibilities will include joining the inpatient CL inpatient service and providing CL psychiatry outpatient care, including dedicated mental health services in the embedded dialysis clinic. General Psychiatric Ambulatory Care might be included in the complement of clinical services that the joining psychiatrist will provide. There are opportunities to support interested candidates for a postgraduate Master’s degree that is focused on fundamental biomedical research skills and skills in knowledge translation.


As a full-time member of the Department, the candidate will provide Psychiatry on-call service as part of their clinical responsibilities. The candidate will also have educational responsibilities, which will include clinical supervision, overseeing exams, teaching seminars and participating in educational requirements that are part of the University of Toronto’s Undergraduate Medical Education and Postgraduate Medical Education curricula.

The Department of Psychiatry has a strong tradition in the integration of clinical, teaching and research excellence. Dedication to learner education and involvement in academic activities are essential components of this position. Remuneration will be based on fees for service, available sessional and stipends and the Academic Trust Fund.
