Course Number and Title: FAH352H1S 19th Century Photography

Course Description: An introduction to the major artists, movements, and debates in photography in Europe and North America, from its prehistory to the turn of the century. Issues considered include the relationship of social class to aesthetics, the role of illusion, the rise of mass reproduction.

Estimated Course Enrolment: 99 students

Estimated TA Support (based on full course enrolment): 130 hours

Class Schedule: Wednesdays 3:00-5:00 pm (In Person)

Sessional dates of appointment: January 6, 2025 to April 30, 2025; Final Assessment period April 9-30, 2025.

Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and marking not finished by April 30, 2025.

Salary:

  • Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90
  • Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term $9,930.79
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77
  • Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term $10,326.62
  • Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76
  • Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term $10,570.02

Minimum qualifications:

  • MA in Art History or a related field is required; PhD in Art History is preferred.
  • Teaching, writing, and communication skills in the history of photography are required.
  • Knowledge of major artists, movements, and debates in photography in Europe and North America, from its prehistory to the turn of the century is required.
  • Proven experience in creating and marking undergraduate assignments, exercises, and/or undergraduate essays in art history or a related field.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience in this or a similar course at the university level.
  • Evidence of recent teaching effectiveness would be a great asset.

Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including: preparing and delivering one 2-hour lecture per week and/or leading classroom discussions during the 2 contact hours each week; developing and publishing the syllabus and marking scheme through Quercus; supervision of teaching assistants; preparing relevant assignments for student assessment, and (if applicable) setting and invigilating term tests and final examination / assignments for student assessment; grading and reporting of final grades; maintaining office hours for academic counseling of students; answer queries by email or appointment.
