Course Number and Title: FAH480H1S Special Topics in the History of Art and Architecture

The Global Art Market: Practical Applications

Course Description: This seminar teaches students the practical skills required to achieve success as a professional in today's dynamic art market. Students will directly engage with the local and global art world, learn how to prepare for an art fair, navigate the complexities of a public art project, and conduct studio visits with established artists.

Class Schedule: Thursdays 11:00am-1:00 pm (In Person)

*Please note, the delivery method for this course is currently In Person. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 6, 2025 to April 30, 2025; Final Assessment period April 9-30, 2025.

Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and marking not finished by April 30, 2025.

Salary:

  • Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90
  • Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term $9,930.79
  • Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77
  • Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term $10,326.62
  • Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76
  • Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher in Art History, Art Business, Arts Administration, or related field with extensive experience in the contemporary art market.
  • Proven track record of at least 5 years working professionally in galleries, auction houses, art fairs, or as an independent art consultant.
  • In-depth knowledge of the global art market, including current trends, key players, and market dynamics.
  • Hands-on experience in organizing and participating in international art fairs.
  • Strong network of connections with established artists, galleries, and art institutions.
  • Experience in conducting and facilitating meaningful studio visits with artists.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively teach practical concepts to students.
  • Previous experience creating and marking undergraduate assignments, exercises, and/or undergraduate essays in art history or a related field.
  • Training in education would be an asset.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience in this or a similar course at the university level.

Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including: preparing and delivering one 2-hour lecture per week and/or leading classroom discussions during the 2 contact hours each week; developing and publishing the syllabus and marking scheme through Quercus; preparing relevant assignments for student assessment, and (if applicable) setting and invigilating term tests and final examination / assignments for student assessment; grading and reporting of final grades; maintaining office hours for academic counseling of students; answer queries by email or appointment.
