Course Number and Title: PHL237H1F Introduction to Chinese Philosophy
Course Description: A historical introduction to Chinese philosophy, covering selected figures and texts from the Warring States period through the Qīng dynasty. Schools of thought covered include Confucianism, Mohism, Daoism, Legalism, "Profound Learning," Neo-Confucianism, and "Evidential Learning." Texts and thinkers include the Confucian Analects, Mòzǐ, Mèngzǐ, Xúnzǐ, Dàodéjīng, Zhuāngzǐ, Hán Fēi, Guō Xiàng, Zhū Xī, Wáng Yángmíng, and Dài Zhèn.
Estimated Course Enrolment: 100 students
Estimated TA Support: 110 Hours
Class Schedule: Thursdays 18:00-21:00
Sessional Dates of Appointment: Setpember 1st, 2024-December 31st, 2024
Salary (includes vacation pay): $9,457.89 Sessional Lecturer I; $9,930.79 Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $10,121.77 Sessional Lecturer II; $10,326.62 Sessional Lecture II Long Term; $10,362.76 Sessional Lecturer III; $10,570.02 Sessional Lecturer III Long Term.
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in philosophy (or related); strong academic record and professional promise; ongoing research and scholarly publications in the field; relevant and recent teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants who have clearly demonstrated teaching excellence in the subject matter.
Description of Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades and holding office hours.
