Position Summary

The Office of the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education (OVPIUE) supports ongoing and new efforts to enhance the quality and expand the reach of high-impact teaching and learning practices at the University of Toronto. The office directly administers, advises, or partners on institutional teaching and learning programs and services including, but not limited to:

  • The Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation, which includes the University’s course evaluation system;
  • Institutional teaching awards and grants;
  • Enterprise-level educational technology systems, platforms, and projects (Learning Management System, learning analytics, academic analytics, course information system, student advising system);
  • Institutional initiatives and technology platforms relating to experiential learning and undergraduate research;
  • Engagement with external organizations on teaching and learning-related matters (e.g., government grants and performance-based funding, sectoral organizations).


The unit also plays a key service and coordinating role in support of program and curricular design, in collaboration with academic divisions and the Office of the Vice-Provost, Academic Programs.


The Manager, Teaching Initiatives is responsible for designing and implementing select programs and strategies that will advance the OVPIUE’s strategic teaching and learning initiatives and provide value to the U of T teaching and learning community.


Under the general direction of the Director, OVPIUE, the Manager, Teaching Initiatives will work with a high level of autonomy and have full managerial authority over a team responsible for developing, implementing, administering, and supporting cyclical programming and special projects related to pedagogical innovation, all forms of experiential learning, and recognition for teaching excellence, as well as building and maintaining strong relations with university and external stakeholders in associated organizations. The Manager, Teaching Initiatives will provide strategic advice to the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education (VPIUE), the Director, OVPIUE, and senior leadership in the Provost’s Division on a wide range of teaching & learning and experiential initiatives in support of the University’s teaching mission.


The Manager, Teaching Initiatives will be responsible for cultivating, building, and overseeing strategic initiatives relating to pedagogical grants, teaching awards, and high-impact teaching and learning practices, with a focus on experiential learning and undergraduate research.

Qualification Required:

Education:

  • Graduate degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years related administrative experience in a post-secondary setting.
  • Education and experience should include a focus on pedagogical innovation, experiential learning programming and principles, program planning and evaluation, and teaching excellence.
  • Demonstrated success with the implementation of new initiatives and processes.
  • Experience with program development, service delivery and evaluation of those activities in a higher education context.
  • Knowledge of the structure of the University, its policies and procedures.
  • Experience leading complex and multi-stakeholder projects.
  • Management experience in a unionized environment.

  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Ability to successfully execute on multiple large-scale and complex projects.
  • Proven influencing and teamwork skills, and the ability to lead co-workers in projects and teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, including time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and work to stringent deadlines.
  • Attention to detail, organized, superior fact-checking and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to think strategically, critically and analytically, and make appropriate decisions.
  • Comfortable with quantitative and qualitative data.

  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and be both creative and flexible.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, build consensus and be sensitive to the needs and interests of various stakeholders, and contribute to the functioning of a diverse team both within the department and across the institution.
