Estimated TA support: TA consultation will be available from partner engineering courses as required.

Estimated course enrolment: 100 for CIV282; 100 for CIV382

Class schedule: For CIV282, students attend 1 one-hour lecture and 1 one-hour tutorial per week. The course typically runs eleven weekly sessions over the course of the term, with potential breaks in between classes for midterm relief or holidays (final schedule TBD). For CIV382, meeting times between students and instructor must be arranged. In particular, instructors are expected to have time available for mandatory group meetings during the first two weeks of term in September and January.

Other duties may involve participating in additional courses on an as needed basis, final scheduling TDB. This position functions as a Y course, and requires a time commitment of a maximum of 345 hours, including Reading Week and the final exam periods.

Dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 – April 30, 2025

Hours: Up to 1.5 HCE (up to a maximum of 345 hrs)

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 - $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term - $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer 2 - $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term - $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer 3 - $10,362.76 and Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term - $10,570.02. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. Experience in both courses within the CIV portfolio (CIV282/CIV382) and in Engineering Science.

Preferred Qualifications: qualifications include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level. Familiarity with engineering communication practices, or other experience in Civil Engineering education and practice is also highly desirable. Experience across a range of ECP courses and involvements is also valued.

Description of duties:

Working closely with the coordinator, administration, coordination, and instruction of communication curricula in Civil and Mineral Engineering and Engineering Science, including:

  • Teaching one tutorial section in CIV282 and support the teaching team by taking on tutorial planning and development, and benchmarking leads

  • Serving as the lead instructor in CIV382, which involves supporting up to 40 students in their portfolio development, grading portfolio submissions, developing and delivering instructional content, and coordinating the teaching team’s support for student portfolio development

  • Liaising with CIV/MIN faculty where necessary to create current curricular map of communication deliverables, to strengthen current collaborations, and to identify other potential points of contact for communication instruction

  • Reviewing, revising, preparing and delivering second and third year course content, including learning objectives, weekly lesson plans and lectures, and other content for CIV/MIN courses

  • Assisting CIV/MIN portfolio coordinator in preparing course materials and delivering workshops, lectures, and activities where needed

  • Must have the ability to adapt to different communication instruction activities and move online if required.
