About us:

The Biomanufacturing Hub Network (BioHubNet) is an immersive talent development program aimed at producing industry-ready, highly qualified personnel (HQP) in the biomanufacturing sector through comprehensive training initiatives with deep industry engagement. BioHubNet has been recently awarded $18.9 million in federal funding. BioHubNet is committed to delivering state-of-the-art training crucial for Canada’s future in biomanufacturing and pandemic preparedness. It offers tailored training programs drawing on the collective expertise of academia, industry, hospitals, and not-for-profit organizations. The core of the BioHubNet model is industry-led and industry-relevant credentialled training to meet the skills needed in the biomanufacturing sector combined with experiential learning through internships and residencies. BioHubNet will provide training to a diverse range of HQP, including clinical associates, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians, focusing on three key thematic areas: ENGAGE – microcredential courses; EXPERIENCE – experiential learning; EQUIP – entrepreneurial training, all of which will be pursued with attention to EQUITABLE opportunities.

Through BioHubNet’s training, HQP will be better equipped for careers in biomanufacturing and the life sciences ecosystem more generally.

Your opportunity:

As the Marketing and Communications Officer, you will deliver world class communications content that promotes BioHubNet and PRiME’s initiatives, goals, and mandate. Reporting to the Director, BioHubNet, and working closely with the Director, Strategy & Partnerships at PRiME, you will develop strategies and implement plans that communicate research and training program advances to a broader audience of stakeholders. You will provide external relations and outreach strategies by planning, developing and implementing an integrated multichannel communication strategy through community engagement with external collaborations and partnerships. You will also develop promotional and marketing materials and deliver empowering narratives through social, digital and print media platforms. You will develop a compelling and highly integrated and functional website. As an action-oriented, strategic thinker with exemplary writing skills, you will have an ability to build trusting relationships and develop unique, engaging and compelling content that meets the BioHubNet and PRiME’s overall objectives.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and overseeing tasks related to the production and dissemination of communications/marketing materials
  • Writing and editing copy and content to advance communications objectives, including writing news and feature stories
  • Researching and recommending story ideas that advance priorities and initiatives
  • Conducting interviews with leaders, faculty, staff and students for external publication, including, for example a pod-cast
  • Implementing a digital media plan that supports marketing/communications strategy
  • Creating and maintaining presence on social media platforms to promote BioHubNet and PRiME
  • Creating and updating a website that is clear, functional and easily navigable for BioHubNet and PRiME

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in communications or public relations in a scientific or technical field, or in science journalism.
  • Experience planning and executing outreach strategies
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to concisely summarize complex information including excellent research, writing and editing and print design/layout skills essential
  • Proven experience translating scientific material and writing content, developing themes, and maintaining consistent brand identity for multiple audiences and platforms, including print, digital websites and social media platforms
  • High level of proficiency with MS Office, CMS (Drupal), Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, LaTex, Mailchimp, ClickUP or equivalent
  • Superior fact-checking, and proofreading skills with a strong portfolio of writing that is clear, accurate, and compelling
  • Strong time management skills to achieve results and to meet critical timelines in collaboration with stakeholders
  • Professional demeanor with a strong customer service orientation and effective interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail, political acuity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality and discretion in dealing with all inquiries
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, showing initiative and good judgment, and work cooperatively and be an effective team member
  • Proven effectiveness in relating to all levels of faculty, staff, students and individuals external to the University


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience with print design, layout/production, desktop publishing, and web content management (e.g., creating, maintaining and updating websites)
  • Experience in research communications and knowledge of the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals highly desirable
  • Experience providing strategic and innovative communications recommendations (online and print)
  • Experience working in a complex multi-stakeholder environment, supporting multiple projects and priorities
  • Ability to interpret, translate, and distill scientific research into compelling, engaging, and enlightening communications for a variety of audiences
  • Exceptional storytelling and presentation material creation skills
  • Experience writing and editing in a not-for-profit environment and using social media in a work setting
  • Must be an effective problem solver and have strong organizational and time management skills, with an ability to work under pressure and set/balance competing priorities

USW Pay Band 14 -- $88,290 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $112,911. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
