Sessional Lecturer - BCH377 H - Biochemistry Lab 1

Course Description: This course is designed to build upon the laboratory material introduced in BCH242Y, and to provide a foundation for more advanced methods utilized in the subsequent biochemistry lab courses which are taken by BCH and IMM Specialists. The topics covered include: i) Properties of buffers; 2) Enzyme properties and kinetics (Michaelis-Menten analyses); 3) Protein purification and analysis, including chromatography, spectrophotometric protein assays, enzyme assays, SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry analysis; 4) Isolation of genomic DNA, PCR analysis, and agarose gel electrophoresis; 5) Methods to study protein unfolding (chemical and thermal denaturation), and protein expression, stability and degradation (western blotting and enzyme assays).

Estimated Course Enrolment: 30

Estimated TA Support: 175 hours

Class Schedule: Labs: Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and Lectures: Thursdays 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Sessional Date of Appointment: September 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024

Qualifications:

Applicant must have convocated with a Ph.D to be given consideration for this position.

Candidates should possess a doctorate degree in relevant discipline or in a closely related field and demonstrate expertise and mastery of the subject area. Preference will be given to individuals with prior laboratory teaching experience in this subject area.

Description of Duties:

Coordination of lab, meeting with and supervising TAs in the lab, interacting with DTL for lab setup, setting exam and maintaining grades, presenting lecture material, holding office hours, answering student emails, maintaining course blackboard, provide marking schemes for TAs. Modifying lab content/delivery as necessary to accommodate evolving public health guidance.

Salary: $9,457.90 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half course.
