Description:

This course explores the theory and practice of community-engaged learning (CEL) in the fields of social/eco-justice education and global education. CEL integrates academic service learning, community-based placements, and reflection into powerful learning experiences that benefit both students and community partners. In this course, students will learn about the historical and conceptual foundations of CEL, and experience its opportunities and tensions firsthand in school and community settings. Students will identify and critically interrogate current educational research, practice, and policy in areas related to CEL, including experiential education, transformative learning, project-based education, place-based education, global education, and citizenship education. This course will use a combination of in-person classes, online learning, and a placement in a CEL setting (min. of 35 hours). Due to the school and/or community placement requirement, interested students must gain prior approval of the course instructor.

This course is one of a pairing of courses to be taught by the same instructor. They are connected to the site-specific curriculum of one of the Master of Teaching school-site cohorts. As such, one instructor will be hired to teach CTL 7014H 0181 and CTL5701H 0181. This course is taught on-site at Carnegie Public School in YRDSB. The successful applicant must have demonstrated current knowledge grounded in existing professional networks with both Carnegie P.S. and YRDSB educational priorities and demonstrated skills related to building community and program development involving a range of stakeholders (including school educators, OISE participants and administration, and community partners)

Estimated course enrolment: 35

Class schedule: Thursday 13:00 - 16:00

Sessional dates of appointment: Sep. 2024 to Apr. 2025

Salary: As of May 01, 2024, the minimum stipend is $9,457.90 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.


Minimum qualifications:

Candidates:

- Must have demonstrated current knowledge grounded in existing professional networks with both Carnegie P.S. and YRDSB educational priorities

- Demonstrate skills related to building community and program development involving a range of stakeholders (including school educators, OISE participants and administration, and community partners)

- Must possess a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional experience

- Must demonstrate currency and mastery in the course subject matter

- Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, including online teaching as relevant

- Must demonstrate evidence of knowledge and practice of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion

- Must demonstrate excellence in teaching and leading teachers/teacher-candidates’ professional learning

- Must have K-12 Ontario classroom experience

- Must possess an Ontario Teaching certificate with OCT qualifications in the relevant division

- Must have strong listening and communication skills

- Must have a commitment to student support

- Must be collaborative and works well as a member of a team
