Your Opportunity:
The Director, Sport and Recreation provides administrative leadership and management oversight to the athletics, physical activity programs, equity and client services initiatives in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education for the University of Toronto Community predominantly on the St. George campus. As a member of the Athletics and Physical Activity senior leadership team, the Director contributes to the development of Faculty wide strategic priorities, specific program objectives and to the co-curricular budget process.
The Director provides leadership and direction to all staff within the University of Toronto Sport and Rec (KPE) portfolio.
The Director is responsible for the provision of a wide range of high quality educational, athletics and physical activity opportunities that address, in a proactive way, the sport, fitness and health needs of the diverse student population and general community. The Director provides sound administrative management instilling best practices, policies, procedures and processes that support the strategic objectives across the unit.
The Director is responsible for maintaining strong relationships with a wide range of sport, physical activity and recreation leaders, and takes a strategic leadership role in
developing a network of professionals to ensure collaboration and coordination in policies and practices that impact on sport, broad based physical activity and recreation. These relationships include provincial and national sport federations, the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, Parks and Recreation Ontario, City of Toronto Forestry and Recreation, and Sport for Life.
MINIMUM QUALIFITICATIONS:
7. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION:
University degree in Physical and Health Education, Kinesiology (Master’s preferred) or the equivalent in education and experience required. Extensive knowledge of the Canadian college/university physical activity/ recreation system; of current student development theory and practice as it pertains to physical activity in an educational setting; and of innovative approaches to supporting student success. This knowledge could have been gained through a formal academic program, and/or through practical experience, self-study, and attendance at relevant conferences and seminars.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five years in progressively senior management positions within co-curricular physical activity and sport and/or student life and/or services. Substantial experience in the creation, administration and assessment of leading-edge co-curricular programs; with a focus on student learning, and inclusive participation in healthy physical activity and sport. Demonstrated success in strategic planning, defining and assessing student learning outcomes; building interdependent communities and implementing student life learning assessment. Demonstrated ability to appreciate, synthesize and apply principles of practice from the disciplines commonly present in a comprehensive student life environment. Direct experience in policy development and budget management. Demonstrated skills in leading, developing and supporting staff, and in managing organizational change. A comprehensive understanding of the University is an asset.
SKILLS:
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills that support consensus building and shared decision-making not only within the job’s own portfolio but also with administrators, faculty and academic leaders. Proven problem solving and negotiation. Proven skills in training, mentoring and managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment. Technical understanding of various database software, above average working knowledge of PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

Exemplary leadership as an ambassador and advocate for sport, physical activity and recreation. Advanced leadership in the creation of a welcoming an engaging environment that is supported through exemplary student and membership service. Proven analytical ability; ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines. Sensitivity and ability to act on issues/problems/initiatives involving equity and diversity; political astuteness and tact; results oriented; approachable and collaborative management style; ability to maintain professional decorum and make sound judgements under pressure. Ability to deal with a variety of tasks and meet strict deadlines; ability to frequently adjust priorities, great attention to detail required. Must be able to handle matters of a confidential and sensitive nature. Ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative.
