Working under general direction of the Director, Business Improvement & Strategic Initiatives, the Senior Projects Manager is responsible for identifying issues, advising on strategy options, recommending solutions, implementing project plans and responding to the objectives and priorities of the Office of the Vice-President and Principal (OVPP). Working closely with the Director, Business Improvement & Strategic Initiatives, as well as other senior university administrators, the Senior Projects Manager is responsible for project management and implementation to ensure that the work of the OVPP and the Campus Project Management Office (PMO) can be carried out efficiently and effectively. The Senior Projects Manager manages multiple, simultaneous strategic initiatives through the planning, resourcing, and implementation stages (including resource identification, consultation with stakeholders, and identifying relevant training requirements), facilitating execution of all assigned projects to meet deadlines and success criteria.

This position will be charged with supporting major change initiatives, priority projects, and process improvements related to the Campus’ strategic framework.

The Senior Projects Manager applies best practices in project management principles to support the PMO in pursuing the Campus’ strategic priorities, to develop a high-level timeline of all current and future projects under their purview, to enable the Director, Business Improvement & Strategic Initiatives to identify suitable resourcing and to operate within appropriate time frames. Such project management and implementation includes: (a) providing strategic advice on strategies for dealing with specific issues, (b) drafting proposals, (c) advising on draft policies, proposals and drafts, (d) initiating and undertaking detailed research on a wide variety of issues and topics, (e) following-up on decisions made by the Vice President and Principal and members of the senior executive team, and outcomes of interactions of relevant committees and with various stakeholder groups, (f) assisting with administrative reviews, and (g) ensuring ongoing maintenance of the highest level of pro-activity and service for the portfolio of the OVPP. The Senior Projects Manager will coordinate, assist with and advance projects, initiatives, and daily activities within the OVPP that require knowledge of confidential information about Divisional staffing, priorities and new strategic and operational directions.

As part of an integrated OVPP team and the Project Management Office (PMO) team, the incumbent works with other professionals to advance projects, initiatives and daily activities within the office that require knowledge and protection of confidential information.

The role of the Senior Projects Manager will continue to evolve and the individual must be willing to respond to the given priorities of the day and be willing to work cooperatively in a challenging and dynamic environment.

The incumbent works in a complex environment that requires a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness, and a need to maintain absolute confidentiality. The incumbent must present a professional image in the Office by interacting knowledgeably and courteously with the many people including senior administrators, faculty, staff, students and community members who come into contact with the OVPP.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

University degree required, post graduate degree (Master's or PhD) an asset, or equivalent in education and experience. Certificate in Project Management an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a University setting in progressively senior positions; Extensive experience within a post-secondary environment and knowledge of post-secondary policies and procedures and organizational structure, including its governance; Experience leading complex and multi-stakeholder projects; Knowledge about media, protocol, diplomacy and an excellent understanding of a post-secondary institution’s mission and intersection with the broader community.

SKILLS:
Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office (must be able to set up templates and macros in Word and Excel, set up Excel spreadsheets and graphics, prepare sophisticated PowerPoint presentations, knowledge of SharePoint), Internet, SharePoint, Acrobat, and scheduling software.

Superior critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills; political acuity and judgement; ability to engage with senior University administrators and academics in a manner which facilitates cooperation and consensus building; ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, discretion and tact; excellent communication (written and oral), facilitation, presentation and leadership skills; creative, self-directed, innovative, results oriented; flexibility and problem solver orientation; detail oriented balanced with a big picture perspective; ability to work under pressure; superior organizational and time management skills in planning, project management and task coordination; strong leadership capabilities; and solid understanding of Project Management methodologies.
