Your opportunity:
Working under the direction of the Project Lead, Prof. Marney Isaac, you will serve as project coordinator for the large NSERC/SSHRC funded project: Toward sustainable urban and peri-urban agriculture for net-zero food systems. This research project focuses on developing sustainable urban agriculture, particularly across the Greater Toronto Area. The project involves the participation of multiple academic institutions, government and non-governmental agencies, and industries working on the area of urban agriculture, and includes Principal Investigators, technicians, students at the Master’s and PhD levels, and postdoctoral researchers.
As the Research Project Coordinator, you will be integral in supporting the overall project goals by coordinating and supporting the day to day activities for the various faculty-led research groups, project partners, as well as supporting outreach activities to the broader urban farming community. You will also work closely with the Department of Physical and Environmental Science’s financial team supporting the various financial transactions required by the project. Your knowledge of accounting fundamentals and keen attention to detail will be critical in supporting financial and accounting activities (e.g. preparing payroll documentation, expense reimbursements, procurement, invoices, running reports, etc.).
This exciting opportunity to support a large and diverse research team as they explore how urban and peri-urban agriculture’s potential both to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs), and increase food production and access in dense and diverse population centers. Your responsibilities will include:
- Scheduling day-to-day project activities
- Fostering positive relationships with project partners
- Creating and updating records
- Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services
- Recording or verifying transactions on a single account
- Coordinating meeting schedules, agendas, materials, action and follow-up items
- Determining logistical details and activities for events and/or programming
- Scheduling day-to-day project activities and regular status meetings
Essential Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in a relevant field (preferably in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or Sustainability) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum three years’ experience supporting and coordinating research projects.
- Experience working directly with research participants and with community agencies in the conduct of community-based research
- Experience in accounting and financial fundamentals including payroll and accounts payables.
- Experience drafting, editing, and preparing a variety of written documentations and correspondence.
- Experience fostering positive relationships with multiple groups including internal and external stakeholders and community partners
- Driver’s license, ability to travel to field sites, conferences and group meetings.
- Demonstrated commitment to accuracy and possess strong attention to detail.
- Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
- Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to work under time constraints, workload pressures; managing conflicting priorities and deadlines despite regular interruptions.
- Experience in accounting and financial fundamentals including payroll and accountspayables.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft excel with an emphasis on the use of formulas, functions and macros for data analysis and presentation.
