Description:
The Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry is seeking a Research Associate in the area of materials development, process chemistry, and heterogeneous catalysis. This position is a part of collaborative research projects within the Pulp and Paper and Catalysis Processing Centre at University of Toronto.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Chemical Engineering, specialized in Energy Processes of a related field
- At least 5 years of experience in heterogeneous catalysis for energy processes, synthetic organic chemistry for sustainable fuel production, thermo-chemical conversion chemistry or related disciplines
- Expertise in catalytic processes development in dry reforming of methane (DRM) reactions, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for liquid hydrocarbon poductions, CO2 conversion, and biomass gasification, gas-to-liquid technology (GTL)
- Experience in designing and working on high pressure and high-temperature industrial fixd bed and fludized bed flow reactors, slury reactors, chemical vapor reactors, micro reactors preferentially under gas phase and supercritical conditions
- Strong competencies in conducting safety analyses such as HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) and PSA (Process Safety Analysis) to identify and mitigate risks ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards
- Knowledge of process automation systems (SCADA, HMI) and process simulation software (ASPEN, Promax), advanced control strategies to enhance process efficiency and safety
- Demonstrated experience in intellectual property management with strong patenting experience for technology redineess level (TRL) escalation
- Strong background in energy system, chemical processes, and heterogeneous catalysis
- Understanding of chemical kinetics and the experimental methods for extracting intrinsic kinetics and statistical data analysis techniques
- Strong knowledge on analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and thermal conversion
- Experience working on and leading industrial projects
- Strong competencies on analytical equipment
- Experience on mentoring mentor and provide technical guidance to students, researchers, junior engineers and team members
- Experience with preparing proposals and coordinating projects
- Experience with industrial programs and scaleup
- Experience with the safety aspects and with working on high pressure industrial flow reactors, preferentially under supercritical conditions
Duties:
- Conceive hypothesis, design experimental plans and conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data
- Review scientific literature, Execute research projects and report on their progress through oral and written reports and scientific journal articles
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Present research at local, national and international meetings
- Interface with industry partners and vendors effectively
- Maintain laboratory equipment, including gas chromatography, mass spectrometer, flow and temperature control system
- When needed, help support setting up new laboratory equipment
- Coordinate research projects and meetings as appropriate
- Responsible for developing written protocols and training researchers on the latest on material testings
- Assist the PI in preparing manuscripts and proposals
- Perform other additional duties to enable the safe and efficient operation of the lab
