The Division of Anatomy in the Department of Surgery, does world-class research and innovative teaching. The Division has research strengths in regenerative medicine, neuroscience and clinical anatomy incorporating the latest technologies and methodologies to address the fundamental biology of cells and systems. Our foundational anatomical and science teaching is focused on excellence and innovation. Over 3000 students participate in our programs each year from undergraduate, graduate and health care professional programs. We have exceptional state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that offer hands on learning opportunities using human cadaveric specimens generously donated to our Willed Body Program, which is one of the largest body donation programs in Canada. Overall, the robust research and teaching in the Division offers an outstanding opportunity to train students in the critical understanding of body structure and function.

Your opportunity:

The role of Anatomy Technician supports both the operation and maintenance of the Anatomical Specimen Facility in the Division of Anatomy, Department of Surgery. Serving as an anatomy resource, you will assist with the preparation and maintenance of human anatomical specimens for teaching labs, research and display in Grant’s Museum in the Division of Anatomy.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • In collaboration with staff and course instructors and according to course schedules, setting up and maintaining teaching labs and aiding in the set-up of examinations
  • Performing embalming, dissection and plastination of anatomical specimen and demonstrating human anatomy to students and/or employees
  • Providing instruction on lab protocols and procedures to students and staff
  • Ensuring the safe handling of human material, specialized equipment and materials
  • Maintaining inventory of anatomical collections, chemicals and/or apparatus within the Division
  • Applying established standards when cleaning lab, rooms and equipment

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years of related experience with anatomical demonstration and dissection.
  • Experience with lab maintenance and record keeping, including ordering supplies and following safety protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of human anatomy, neuroanatomy and embalming procedures.
  • Must have strong attention to detail in dissection.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Accurate record keeping skills
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to lift 100lbs occasionally and 20lbs frequently


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience with prosection preparation is an asset.
  • Master of Science degree is considered an asset.
