Description:

Second level of the Landscape Technician series, under general supervision performs standard and more complex landscape duties. May lead, direct, train other grounds staff.

Typical Duties

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of the responsibility involved in this position. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated.

Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.

a) drives and operates a variety of landscape and snow removal vehicles and equipment such as equipment used in tree maintenance, turf care, chainsaws, sod cutters, riding vacuums, snow maintenance vehicles, tractors (front and back-end loaders) and skid steers;

b) installs and maintains hard and soft landscape, including cultivated and natural environments;

c) maintains landscape irrigation and other landscape related systems;

d) sets up vehicles and equipment for use, and performs simple adjustments;

e) may lead, direct and train other grounds staff;

f) performs the duties of a Landscape Technician I;

g) other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, has successfully completed three certificate courses in a recognized landscape maintenance or related construction program or has completed a minimum 1 year in the University’s horticultural apprentice program.

Experience: Five years of related experience.

Other: Possession of valid Provincial Class "G" driver's license, may require a Class “D” or “DZ” driver's license, possession of current pesticide spraying license, chainsaw operator’s certificate may be required, well versed in plant health care programs and natural pesticide programs, completion of WHMIS certificate program, physical ability to perform required duties, ability to lead, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written), ability to work under all weather conditions and may be required to work long and varied hours.

Shift details

November to April: Monday-Thursday, 12:00pm to 8:30pm; Sunday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

May to October: Monday-Thursday, 10:30am to 7:00pm; Sunday, 8:00am to 4:30pm; 40 hours per week (with half an hour unpaid lunch per day).

NOTE: Must be available to be On Call during the winter months for snow removal operations in accordance with the Collective Agreement
