Your opportunity:

Accessibility Services provides academic accommodations and services for students with disabilities and promotes a fully integrated university experience by ensuring that students have the opportunity to access and participate in all areas of student life. In partnership with a variety of
Student Affairs and Academic departments, Accessibility Services provides comprehensive programming throughout each student’s university career to foster greater resiliency and promote the development of knowledge and skills that are transferrable to their future goals.

Using a holistic approach, you will work with an ethno-culturally and academically diverse student population performing an assessment of students’ needs primarily related to mental health, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders with co-morbid conditions, ensure that appropriate documentation has been received, review and assess confidential medical/psychological documentation; assess, plan, implement, evaluate and adapt accommodations based on the student’s individual disability-related needs; assist the students in self-monitoring the effectiveness of accommodations; make referrals to internal and external supports as appropriate. In addition, you will facilitate the student’s knowledge about their disability, addressing the strengths and challenges the disability brings to their academic pursuits and daily life activities; determine if assistive technology would assist the student, referring when required; assess, recommend, and provide appropriate documentation to support the use of funding for disability-related expenses.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying the established Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Guidelines on Accessible Education (2004) to determine reasonable accommodations
  • Researching and recommending alternative approaches and possible accommodation solutions as part of the duty to accommodate
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring accommodation plans for students based ontheir learning profile and documentation (e.g. reviewing and interpreting psychoeducationalassessments and medical documentation)
  • Reviewing and approving disability related educational expenses through the OSAP Bursary for Students withDisabilities (BSWD)
  • Providing case management support to students requiring the coordination of multiple services
  • Determining the reasonability of an accommodation in relation to a student's disability
  • Counselling students on health issues related to their learning and the effects of their disability
  • Screening (for mental health) and making referrals to appropriate resources and services

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counselling/psychotherapy or social work and/or equivalent
    combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four years of case management experience working with adults with mentalhealth disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
  • Three years of experience dealing with persons in emotional distress or conflict.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessing disability related needs.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and monitoring accommodation plans for personswith disabilities and possessing a thorough understanding of disability issues.
  • An understanding of disability and social equity issues in the post-secondary environment.
  • Computer fluency (e.g. Microsoft Word; Excel).
  • Excellent reading, oral and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have a commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion and be able todemonstrate an understanding of the implications of disabilities as they relateto astudent’s success at university and in a broader context.
  • Must understand the strengths and challenges of adults with disabilities and haveknowledge of cultural views of disability.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, tact, discretion, problem solving skills and to work underpressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize knowledge and display sound judgment, attention todetail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within an inter-disciplinary teamenvironment.
  • Knowledgeable about general academic structure of a University and the specificrequirements of academic courses and programs.
