Your opportunity:

At U of T Mississauga, we are looking for an exceptional Field Services Technician to join our Network Engineering team. Your primary duties include the installation, preventive maintenance and fault remediation of complex local area, wireless and wide area network infrastructures.

You will be part of a highly motivated and dynamic team of network experts, supporting and maintaining the University of Toronto Mississauga campus network. You will contribute to the development of strategic and tactical plans, development of departmental network and telecommunications standards, and liaise with contractors, vendors and internal staff. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting detailed analysis of system performance to inform management decision making
  • Configuring virtual networks and virtual storage on multiple vendor specific platforms
  • Analyzing and installing networking equipment
  • Testing and configuring local area network equipment
  • Updating network topology diagrams
  • Conducting needs assessments to determine end-user technical requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three years of proven, hands-on experience supporting a large, complex campus network with the following: ◦ Optical fibre types and connectors, types of optical transceivers, copper cable types and connectors, cable termination, familiarity with cable-testing technologies, BIX systems and structured cabling in general; ◦ Network equipment: large-capacity switches comprising an excess of 380 PoE interfaces, routers, hubs, wireless access points, repeaters, media converters, patch-panels, switch stack technologies, configuration of equipment using CLI only and firmware upgrades; ◦ Wireless: familiarity with 802.11 b/g/n/ac, authentication methods, understanding of channel use on different frequencies.
  • Protocols: Link aggregation, VLANs, Spanning Tree and its variations, ARP, ICMP, 802.1X, DNS, DHCP, IPv4, familiarity with IPv6 and other layer 1 to 4 network protocols.
  • Software: UNIX, shell scripting, Wireshark/tcpdump, open source office suites and tools, and digital workflows for enterprise operations
  • Must be comfortable working at heights, on ladders, in ceilings and in mechanical spaces.
  • Frequent interaction with contractors, construction workers, vendors, Facilities and IT personnel.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate small projects, and to follow-up on them on a daily basis, and ability to be detailed in the organization and management of equipment inventory.
  • Ability to review and write technical documentation, create network diagrams and floor plans. Ability to understand RFCs, standards, and complex technical concepts in general.
  • Must communicate well both verbally and in writing. Must be able to explain technical concepts to non-technical personnel.
  • Must have initiative and work both independently and as a team member.
  • Strong commitment to high quality service and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management skills to permit simultaneous action onmany tasks, many of which will demand timely completion.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Familiarity with BICSI recommended practices.
  • Familiarity with Cisco networking equipment, including VoIP technology.
  • Familiarity with wireless site-survey software.
