Your opportunity:

Under the direction of the Manager, Systems, the Solutions Architect is responsible for the strategic design, development, and management of both on-premise and future cloud computing infrastructure at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). The incumbent plays a critical role in maintaining the operation of the campus's computing infrastructure services, which support the administrative and academic missions across the campus.

The Solutions Architect manages and oversees all functions related to the campus-wide system architecture and is responsible for strategic and operational planning to ensure the optimum operation of UTSC computing infrastructure, virtualized platform and data storage and backup solutions. Besides having deep technical knowledge of traditional IT infrastructure and systems, this role also requires strong expertise in cloud technologies. The incumbent will lead efforts in modernizing UTSC's IT environment by integrating cloud technologies, with a specific focus on Microsoft Azure, enabling the campus to embrace cloud computing in the future. Additionally, the incumbent is tasked with architecting and overseeing the DevOps environment in the department, ensuring that development, deployment, and operations processes are streamlined and optimized for both performance and reliability.

The Solutions Architect also serves as a key resource for business analysts, IT managers, and other stakeholders, providing expert guidance on technical solutions that align with departmental and campus-wide business objectives. As part of the Information and Instructional Technology Services (IITS) management team, the incumbent contributes to the development of strategic IT plans and policies, advising on new technologies, trends, and opportunities for service improvements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing expansion and enhancement of IT infrastructure and services independently
  • Developing, maintaining, and ensuring the security of campus computing infrastructure and networks services
  • Analyzing, recommending and designing internal network solutions to meet client needs
  • Defining requirements and scope of complex projects with broad impact and long-term consequences
  • Keeping well-informed on current technologies, best practices and industry standards
  • Creating complex and technical documentation and user support guides
  • Acting as an expert resource to developers on architecture, technical standards and coding techniques
  • Serving as an expert resource to a group of professionals in the speciality

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree Computer Science, Engineering, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Six to seven years years of related and demonstrated experience managing complex IT infrastructure environments, including on-premise data centers and virtualization
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining hybrid cloud solutions, with a focus on Microsoft Azure
  • Hands-on expertise in disaster recovery solutions, high-availability environments, and data storage management
  • Demonstrated experience leading DevOps environments and version control systems (e.g., Git), along with knowledge ofinfrastructure automation tools like Ansible and Terraform
  • Extensive knowledge of systems administration on Linux/Unix and Windows platforms, with strong proficiency in protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS) and web services (Apache, Nginx)
  • Advanced experience with programming languages such as Python, PHP, and shell scripting, as well as relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Strong understanding of information security principles and the ability to design secure IT infrastructure
  • Proficiency with ITIL frameworks and service management best practices, with a focus on incident response, change management, and service optimization
  • Familiarity with system monitoring tools and troubleshooting complex performance issues
  • Demonstrated experience supervising technical staff and leading cross-functional teams
  • Experience in handling a variety of projects, deadlines and schedules simultaneously
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex software application issues
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders and team members at all levels
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively, build consensus, maintain confidentiality, exhibit sensitivity to the needs and interests of a variety of stakeholders, and support the functioning of a diverse project team
  • Superb written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated willingness to take initiative and ability to offer creative solutions in problem solving
  • Strong organizational skills coupled with the ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and excel in a fast-paced environment characterized by changing priorities
