About Us:
The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is fourth among peer institutions in North America, behind just Harvard, Yale and Columbia. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 300 graduate programs, over 70 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The UTL data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.
The OISE Library supports teacher education, graduate studies, professional development, and research in the field of education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto. The library has a robust research collection, current and historical curriculum materials and textbooks, media materials, and children’s literature. Librarians and staff at the OISE Library provide access services, research services, and library instruction to support research, teaching, and learning within the OISE community, across the University, and for education practitioners and external researchers. Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Manager of Access Services, the Access Services Generalist is an integral member of the OISE Library and the Access Services team. At our Service Desk the incumbent will be the first point of contact for many user interactions. They will be responsible for cultivating a welcoming safe environment for our students, faculty and staff. They will work closely with colleagues at the OISE Library and across UTL to support Access Services.
Along with providing excellent customer service the incumbent will perform a range of circulation duties: loan services, retrieval services, providing information and referrals, opening/closing the library. Responsible for collection maintenance, stack maintenance, serials check-in and record maintenance, materials processing, performing searches, and bindery processing.
The Access Services Generalist will use comprehensive knowledge of library policies and procedures, as well as the ability to interpret policies and procedures and resolve problems. They will perform complex bibliographic searching and verification tasks. The position will also provide support to students when working together at the service desk and on projects. Provide back-up for other staff and perform other related duties as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Working cooperatively and effectively with supervisors and colleagues in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing environment.
- Part of our rotating desk schedule the incumbent will be the first point of contact for users at our service desk.
- Assisting with access to physical and online material, providing directional support, troubleshooting user technical issues with library equipment, managing study room access.
- Supporting student casual staff with questions on project workflow.
- Maintaining collections through inventory projects, shifting material, preparing/selecting material for binding/mending, updating material from online catalogue when required, retrieving and taking items to storage.
- Working with the OISE security team to close the library.
- Providing support for ground floor events hosted in the library.
- Participating in collections management projects as needed.
Required Qualifications (Minimum):
Formal Education:
- College diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Library Technician diploma preferred.
Experience:
- At least one (1) year of related experience in an academic or public library, public service experience in an academic library an asset
Skills:
- Demonstrated experience assisting users at a fast-paced service desk.
- Working knowledge of integrated library systems software required e.g. Alma
- Knowledge of collection maintenance e.g. bindery processing, inventory management
- Working knowledge of bibliographic searching and verification skills required
- Demonstrated initiative, troubleshooting skills, and experience leading and optimizing workflows to drive efficiency and resolve issues independently.
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, anti-racism, equity and accessibility.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and e-mail software required;
- Ability to accurately interpret and apply guidelines and procedures to a variety of situations and across a variety of platforms and the ability to professionally communicate complex procedures.
Other Skills:
- Working knowledge of the University of Toronto Libraries system and policies
- Experience with the Dewey Decimal Classification System
Notes:
- This position is 100% on-site at the OISE Library and is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
- Will require participation in the OISE Library’s Saturday shift rotation.
- This position will be responsible for the evening closing shift.
