Overview:
The Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to lead/design research projects to investigate mechanism and modulation of synaptic plasticity in vivo.
Qualifications:
Candidates require a Ph.D. with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the fields of neurophysiology. Candidates must have experience designing, planning and executing experiments and research, including demonstrated experience coordinating collaborative projects and directing the workflow of others. They must have experience preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals, and preparing research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies. Previous experience of employing in vivo electrophysiological techniques to study synaptic function in rodent models of disease is essential. At least 9 years of post-doctoral experience is desirable.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter, with strong organizational and problem solving skills, and demonstrate the ability to work independently, but also have strong interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work positively with others.
Key Duties:
- Setting up and running in vivo electrophysiological apparatus.
- Contributing directly to research programs by designing and performing experiments focused on optimising stimulus parameters for inducing strong and persistent long-term potentiation (LTP) in the mouse hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.
- Contributing directly to research programs by designing and performing experiments focused on the study of short-term potentiation (STP) in the mouse hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.
- Investigating how LTP and STP are affected in mouse models of depression and Alzheimer's disease.
- Optimising viral delivery methods
- Reading published papers relevant to the experiments being performed and adapting procedures accordingly.
- Co-ordinating research efforts with collaborators and their teams.
- Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals.
- Presenting findings to research peers and collaborators.
- Assisting with research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies.
