Your opportunity:
New College opened in 1962 and has since developed its own traditions and identity, focusing on personalattention to students, innovative interdisciplinary programs, links with professional faculties, career mentorship and community outreach initiatives. Within our friendly and informal environment, we place a high priority on student support services and we have built a rich and inclusive learning community that includes academic support, amenities for studying and social interaction, and opportunities for co-curricular and community engagement.
The Academic Advisor is a critical member of the team in the Registrar's Office and takes the lead in developing and delivering group sessions around support for scholarship applications and financial aid opportunities. The Academic Advisor promotes a welcoming environment in the College for students fromdiverse backgrounds and serves as the primary support for the Registrar’s Office Awards and Scholarship programs.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Advising students on the development of their educational plans
- Advising students on program and/or course requirements by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences
- Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary
- Advising students on financial aid matters, bursaries, budgeting and personal financial management by probing and providing a range of options and possible outcomes
- Advising students on budgetingand personal financial management
- Developing content for instructional workshops
- Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
- Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience in an academic setting.
- Minimum four (4) years' of recent and related experience providing one-on-one academic advising to university students on academic, financial and personal matters.
- Experience working with and advising current and prospective undergraduate students include international students, academically at-risk students, and students from diverse backgrounds.
- Extensive experience advising current and prospective undergraduate students on financial applications, awards, and bursaries. Experience advising and managing student cases related to financial aid, awards, and applications.
- Experience with conflict resolution and supporting individuals in distress.
- In depth knowledge of and experience advising on the University of Toronto and the Faculty of Arts & Science’s undergraduate programs, procedures, guidelines and program offerings.
- Experience and sound knowledge of best practices in advising and student services.
- Experience providing student and administrative support in a registrar's office in a university setting, preferably in a college's registrar's office.
- Extensive knowledge and experience working with the course offerings and regulations of the College programs.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Advanced skills with ROSI/ACORN, Degree Explorer, or other similar enterprise database solutions/CRM systems, , with the ability to retrieve information, interpret data, and prepare reports.
- Ability to cope with aconstantly changing and complex set of academic regulations.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to cope with individuals experiencing significant levels of distress.
- Ability to exercise tact, judgment and diplomacy, especiallywhen dealing with confidential matters.
- Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi‐task and organize work, and meet tight deadlines while able to pay attention to detail.
- Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to students in a responsive, empathetic, thoughtful, and discreet manner.
- A demonstrated strong student service orientation and commitment to student issues is required, with knowledge an demonstrated application of cultural safety, and equity, diversity, and inclusion principles as applicable for post-secondary students.

USW Pay Band 12 -- $79,874. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $102,147. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
