The Centre for International Experience (CIE), within the Division of Student Life and the Office of Vice President International, provides students opportunities so they can expand their learning into the global arena. CIE enables students to expand their world to gain a global advantage. We work with students, academic units, local and global community to create sustainable and diverse learning abroad experiences that incorporate study, research and professional opportunities. We work in partnership with faculties and services to enable students new to Canada to maximize their time at U of T to meet their goals and aspirations on graduation. Finally, we work to build global learning opportunities on campus curricular, co-curricular and experiential.
Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Director, Learning and Safety Abroad, the Manager, Learning and Safety Abroad will be responsible for a broad range of functions to support the learning and safety abroad initiatives of the University. These functions include but are not limited to: supporting the development and delivery of specialized programming abroad, coordinate creation of new partnerships and opportunities as well as maintaining existing programming, supporting the International Experience and International Experience + awards, developing the Global Experiential Learning portfolio and supporting the Global at Home files, supporting Student Safety Abroad for U of T students abroad.
The Manager, Learning and Safety Abroad will recommend appropriate courses of action to the Director in the following areas: in response to urgent situations when students are abroad, in developing and maintaining learning abroad programming and experiences with existing or new partners, in coordinating student mobility agreements and partnership management, and in supporting learning abroad awards.
The Manager, Learning and Safety Abroad will come into contact with a broad range of students, staff, faculty, and administrators at the university and with various international agencies, organizations, and universities. The incumbent will work very closely with individual faculty members, various learning abroad teams, as well as the rest of the International Experience team to ensure strong support to students abroad.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function
- Developing and implementing new programs and initiatives independently
- Resolving problems that have been referred by other specialists
- Preparing detailed analysis of risk factors to inform planning decisions for international travel
- Monitoring crisis response and intervention procedures to ensure adherence
- Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
- Interpreting and applying policies and procedures when making independent decisions
- Probing for information from students with personal and/or academic difficulties and making appropriate referrals
Essential Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in a relevant discipline or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum eight years related experience in international student mobility and student safety abroad in a university educational environment in a range of experiences (study, research, community or professional placements).
- Minimum five years experience supervising staff required.
- Expertise in online and in-person design and delivery of educational workshops, resources and registries related to safety abroad essential.
- Expertise in preparation for international student activity, specialized programming abroad and response to situations abroad essential.
- Expertise in working with faculty, staff, government agencies and third party providers essential.
- Computer software including design of web-based resources, use of web-based interfaces and databases and advance use of Excel essential.
- Highly developed communication, strong diplomacy, and strong customer service skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects with time-sensitive needs.
- Demonstrated strong proactive approach to program development and implementation.
- Ability to work under constant pressure and stress.
- Ability to be innovative, entrepreunership spirit and problem-solving.
- Political acumen,sense of priorities and strong organizational capabilities.
- Proven ability in student advising and coaching.
- Proven ability to work effectively, within a team and independently, to achieve results with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and to deal with matters of a high-level sensitivity and confidentiality.
- Demonstrated commitment to optimization of work efficiency and rationalization of procedures.
- Demonstrated ability and tact in working with senior administrators (both UofT and partner organizations).
- Ability to work autonomously and with strong team spirit.

USW Pay Band 16 -- $101,539. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $129,851. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
