Your opportunity:

The Division of Teaching Labs (DTL) supports the delivery of laboratory courses and practicals by providing laboratory infrastructure, experimental needs, and technical expertise to departments within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. DTL focuses on providing sustainable, effective, and responsive service to the departments, and ensuring a positive, productive, and safe learning and work environment. We advance youth STEM initiatives through collaborative and in-house outreach and educational programming.

As a Lab Technician, you will be part of a dynamic team supporting the delivery of laboratory courses and practicals. You will provide laboratory support, general lab maintenance, and ensure a safe lab environment. This is an opportunity to serve as a technical resource on lab techniques, experimental procedures and equipment while also promoting and conducting safe, cleanly, and organized lab practices.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing laboratory support and services by setting up lab/workshops according to research/course schedules and lab set up requirements
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures, and protocols
  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for experiments, collecting experimental data, verifying results, and passing on findings
  • Providing general lab maintenance by preparing, assembling and setting up material, equipment and supplies
  • Ensuring safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials and paying close attention to occupational safety precautions

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience working as a Laboratory Technician in a teaching lab environment using a broad range of experimental methods
  • Strong scientific background in biochemistry and molecular biology experimental concept and techniques
  • Experience preparing chemical reagents required for biochemistry, immunology and/or molecular genetics courses
  • Experience handling and working with laboratory cell-lines (Tissue Culture), live biological organisms [such as bacteria, yeast, drosophila (fly), c.elegans (worm)]
  • Hands-on skills and experience in designing, optimizing and troubleshooting experiments for courses
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations, and have experience applying lab safety and protocol procedures, including biological waste disposal and handling Risk Group 2 biologicals
  • Experience working with protein/DNA, ELISA, Gel electrophoresis, spectrophotometers, microscopes etc.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Must be able to operate, calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment used in teaching labs
  • Solid team player with excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Physical ability to lift objects of up to 25kg
