The Department of Statistical Sciences is one of the top ten statistics departments in North America, with our faculty developing numerous important innovations in statistical science. Our mission is to serve as a centre of excellence for statistical and actuarial research and education, across the campus, nationally and internationally. Research is centered on excellence in theory and methods, as many faculty members in the department have very successful collaborative research programs. Central to our vision for the next five years is to strengthen our national and international reputation in collaborative scientific activity, without compromising our core strengths.

Reporting to the Manager, Graduate Programs, the MFI Communication Officer is responsible for advising on communication strategies to support goals and priorities of the MFI program and for implementing MFI's marketing and advertising plans. The incumbent will build and strengthen relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance, promote programs and service offerings to internal and/or external contacts, and deliver presentations outlining proposals to attract sponsorship opportunities. In support of MFI communications initiatives, the MFI Communication Officer is also responsible for conceptualizing, organizing and executing event activities.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing communication plans that support outreach goals and objectives
  • Advising clients on marketing and advertising strategies for multimedia channels
  • Implementingcommunity relations outreach plans for targeted audiences
  • Designing surveys, interviews and other research tools for program evaluation
  • Producing promotional and outreach materials
  • Conceptualizing special events and/or functions
  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
  • Delivering presentations outlining proposals to attract sponsorship opportunities

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or related discipline or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of four years of related experience working in media, communications or public relations.
  • Demonstrated experience with social media and digital communications in a professional setting, including tracking and reporting on meaningful metrics.
  • Experience creating a branding portfolio for a department or initiative.
  • Experience with planning and coordinating large scale events and conferences.
  • Experience developing and maintaining relationships and rapport with students, alumni, and faculty and generating positive media coverage.
  • Experience developing and managing content for websites, newsletters and social media platforms.
  • Experience outreach and building strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the Financial Insurances and/or Data Scienceindustry.
  • Experience adhering to brand identity and AODA guidelines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Web content management and design software including Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated experience with Content Management Software and web analytics.
  • Demonstrated working experience with social media tools (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to promote initiatives and events.
  • Excellent attention to detail and solid copyediting and proofreading skills.
  • High standard of professionalism with superior communication skills (Oral and written).
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of initiative, accuracy, and organizing work effectively and establishing priorities.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto’s Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.
