We are an early-stage London-based start-up working on a novel prosthetic socket for lower limb amputees. Beginning with folks with an amputation below the knee, we have designed an automatically adjusting prosthetic socket (passive, mechanical) to make movement more comfortable and therefore more regular. Our device allows people to stay happy and healthy throughout life, while minimizing the mental burden of caring for their residual limb. It also decreases the prosthesis abandonment rate, allowing prosthetists (clinicians who fabricate prostheses) to retain their patients and increase the profitability of their practice.

We are looking for a mechanical or biomedical engineer who loves to tinker, create and problem solve to join our research and development team for our automatically adjusting prosthetic socket. This engineer will have experience creating hardware with a design background and an understanding of mechanics. You are crafty, can make quick prototypes that demonstrate value, and can offer up unique suggestions to help solve problems as they arise through the prototyping phase. Our company offers an inclusive culture and is dedicated to helping you develop your career.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Take current prototype designs and convert into a more detailed design for modularity and placement of mechanical elements

  • Create 3D printed models that can be used for prototyping from the modelled design

  • Understand design considerations and simulations on functional mechanical elements

  • Design for ergonomics and esthetics considerations

  • Taking a non-scaled prototype and design to be scaled into optimal comfort, size and fit

  • Work with founders to input values and requirements from a medical and human centered design perspective (understanding testing considerations, human tolerances, function and symptom matching)

  • Report using QMS and PLM protocol on the engineering challenges, risks and limitations gathered through prototyping and testing for mechanical functions

  • Offer up recommendations for new functionality and technology that can be used

  • Provide cost estimates for materials and equipment

  • Develop and iterate on a bill of materials

Required Skills:

  • Be passionate about new products and have an entrepreneurial, crafty, go-getter spirit!

  • Teamwork, while also being comfortable working independently

  • Mechanical prototyping and/ or product design experience

  • 3D CAD experience (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, etc.)

  • Additive manufacturing experience

  • Creativity and unique thought process around design ideas

  • Comfortable writing technical documents and recording your thought process; understand and communicate design improvements

  • Analyze results and adjust design when needed

  • Convert basic design information into working drawings and models

  • Understand basic engineering fundamentals

  • Knowledge of machining and fabrication for future high-fidelity prototypes Mechanical Engineer Vessl Prosthetics Inc.

Nice to Have:

  • 3+ years’ industry experience developing mechanical devices (show me your stuff on your resume!)

  • Prosthetics experience and/or interest

  • Start-up experience and/or interest

  • Understanding PLM, QMS and ISO standards and its implementation

  • Manufacturing process experience

  • Product validation experience

  • Finite element modelling and finite element analysis

What is in it for you:

  • Ability to hone your entrepreneurial skills in a past paced environment with passionate founders

  • Inclusive and inquisitive company culture that is dedicated to listening to their employees and helping them develop their career
