Job title: R&D Engineering & Operations Associate
Position Description:
Xpan Inc. is medical device startup that develops surgical products aimed at reducing complications in minimally invasive surgery. We are recruiting a well-rounded engineer to support the R&D and operations activities of the business. The candidate will work closely with the management and the product development team to commercialize a novel trocar technology. The position will be split between engineering design and business operations responsibilities, with an emphasis on engineering. The company is headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario and offers flexible/hybrid work environment.
Tasks & responsibilities:
Engineering
- Support the development of new pipeline products.
- Design and iterate on new and existing product designs using 3D printing, and other rapid-prototyping techniques.
- Draft test protocols and perform bench-top testing.
- Collect and analyze test data to drive design decisions.
- Support the quality engineering team with product complaints, and maintenance of the QMS.
- Conduct literature and IP research.
Investor Relations and Outreach:
- Reach out to new investors and follow up with existing ones.
- Research investors’ history, investment strategies, and mutual connections.
- Apply for non-dilutive funding opportunities (grants, pitch competitions) and complete reporting.
Marketing and Communication:
- Manage social media accounts, website, blogs, and newsletters.
- Develop marketing materials such as animations, videos, and brochures (using MS Office and Photoshop/video editing skills).
Market Research and Strategy:
- Conduct market research and prepare summary reports (market sizing, competitive landscape, pricing, SWOT analysis, positioning, M&As, etc.).
- Prepare marketing materials for clinical showcases and conferences (banners, brochures, display materials).
Financial and Administrative Tasks:
- Assist in creating diligence reports for investors.
- Organize and label expenses for accountants & coordinate payments.
Financial Modeling and Planning:
- Format financial pro-forma (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) using company templates.
- Perform financial and business scenario modeling:
- Research basic assumptions (from 3rd party quotes, team members, literature)
- Build various cashflow scenarios (conservative, nominal, aggressive)
- Project planning: track performance against financial models & timelines (Gantt charts).
Operations:
- Obtain quotes from third parties related to clinical studies, animal studies, and manufacturing.
- Manage suppliers, and purchase materials and capital equipment.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
Candidate requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering with preference for degrees with business minors.
· 1-2 years of experience in the medical device, or related, industries.
· Must be a quick learner and interested in being in a dynamic startup environment (jack-of-all-trades).
· Proven excellence & experience in product design and development.
· Experience in using hand, powered tools & comfortable with machine shop equipment.
· Experience in design and modeling of parts and assemblies in SolidWorks.
· Experience in developing parts through rapid prototyping methods, such as 3D printing.
· Experience in developing benchtop testing procedures and testing apparatus.
· Familiarity with analyzing data and using statistical methods.
· Ability to conduct literature and/or intellectual research and summarize results in succinct and organized methods.
· Able to self-manage (setting high level objectives and granular tasks) especially under aggressive timelines.
· Prior business development/marketing/sales experience.
